The documentary Far Beyond the Sun (Daleko za sluncem), which was filmed for HBO Europe by director Olga Špátová, maps the life of medic Aleš Bárta, who decided to found a hospital in one of the poorest parts of Africa. Aleš Bárta loved Africa ever since he was a child. Ten years ago he took a trip around Kenya, where more than half the population lives under the poverty line. He was looking for a good place to start a hospital. He found one in the small town of Itibo in an out-of-reach part of Kenya called Nyamira, which is full of diseases and where people are unable to receive the medical help they need. Many patients were dying needlessly of illnesses and injuries which are commonly curable. The clinic is part of the ADRA's development project and doctors and students of medicine from the Czech Republic frequently travel there. Thanks to Aleš Bárta, the clinic is now equipped with an operation room, a dentistry, an ambulance, and a maternity ward. During the last ten years, the Czech hospital has managed to elevate the standard of living and halve the infant mortality rate. Since then, African and Czech doctors and medical students have treated ten thousand people and saved hundreds of lives. (texte officiel du distributeur)

anglais It’s good to watch a similar documentary every now and then, so a Czech person could realize what the world around us is like. Especially when we can’t go out and experience it on our own. It’s not only the world that is interesting. There are also interesting people who are behind all this and who make our small country proud in central Africa. I tip my hat off. At times, the documentary needn’t have been so explicit, such as showing the birth, but other than that I learnt many interesting things. ()
