The inhabitants of the Chukchi peninsula in Northeast Siberia have always lived off seal hunting and reindeer herding, at one with nature. But today, their culture and traditions are in danger from Russian immigration and the effects of modern civilization.
The sea is covered in ice. The air – lucid and clear. Not a soul in sight, just the polar wind between blocks of ice. At four in the morning, Eduard must leave for the seal hunt. The 50 year old Inuit was born in Chukchi land the furthermost part of north Siberia, Russia. Eduard is a "Man of the sea" like all the seal hunters here. Reindeer herders are on the other hand known as "Men of the land". They live far deep in the Tundra of the Chukchi-Peninsula between the Polar Sea and the Pacific. No trains or roads can reach the place. Only sleigh dogs know the way. The hunter visits his friend Kawas. As far as the eye can see the place is full of Reindeer. In the midst the isolated nomad tent. Everything appears to be in harmony with nature. Eduard and Kawas with their families live with their own traditions as they did a century ago. Not even the Soviet power or the times of its fall managed to destroy the archaic traditions of their tiny Chukchi population. Nevertheless, today this little community with about 8000 people is increasingly under threat. They are threatened by poverty and vodka, from Russian immigration and so called civilisation.
