Marcus Schwartz is an old man who has concealed his Jewish past ever since he survived the horrors of Auschwitz. But one day he has to unravel what he has carefully hidden for most of his life. Marcus is a Holocaust survivor. After the war, his strategy for survival had been to forget everything - as though nothing had happened, the horror had never taken place and his family had not been killed. As an old man Marcus is all of a sudden caught up by his past and wants to be buried in a Jewish graveyard. To his surprise though, he must first prove that he is Jewish. In search of proof he must return to the village of his childhood in Hungary. A young Turkish woman, Gül, agrees to accompany him. For both begins a critical examination of their own identity.
