There are billions of asteroids in the Solar System. If some of these asteroids collide or somehow deviate from their trajectories, it is possible for them to roam our Solar System for billions of years. The Chelyabinsk meteor ended its aeons long journey above the surface of Earth in February 2013. The explosion was almost thirty times more powerful than the Hiroshima nuclear bomb. This incident, called the event of the century by some scientists, resulted in almost one thousand wounded, and the subsequent shockwave broke the windows of thousands of buildings in the radius of around one hundred kilometres. Meteor Strike follows the work of scientists trying to reconstruct the actual event, as well as the trajectory of this meteor through the Solar System. Using amateur video recordings and information that shows the camera’s precise location at the time of the event, scientists are able to reconstruct not only the meteor’s original path, but also its velocity and size. This thousand tons of bad news may not be the last to hit Earth. New technologies are being developed which, once deployed in orbit, might be able to chart those heavenly bodies that have so far gone undetected by the current generation of telescopes.
