"If somebody raped his mother that’s very shameful. But if you collaborated with Israel that’s much more shameful." Jadis, le jeune Mosab avait foi dans les paroles et les actions de son père, le cheik Hassan Youssef, l’un des fondateurs de l’organisation islamiste radicale Hamas, qui terrorise Israël encore aujourd’hui. Mais Mosab est désormais considéré comme le pire des traîtres par sa famille comme par de nombreux Palestiniens. Fait prisonnier dès l’adolescence par les Israéliens pour détention d’armes illicite, Mosab prend une décision qui va brusquement changer sa vie: il commence à travailler comme informateur pour l’ennemi présumé, Shin Beth, le service de sécurité intérieure israélien. Poussé par son officier traitant israélien et par les doutes grandissants qu’il nourrit envers la politique du Hamas, Mosab espionne sa propre famille pendant plus de dix ans. Le réalisateur Nadav Shirman met en scène, en se basant sur les mémoires de Mosab, cette histoire proprement incroyable sous la forme d’un classique thriller documentaire. (Zurich Film Festival)

The Green Prince is shot in a minimalist way and obviously with a small budget. The use of such primitive film techniques theoretically should not work at all, as ninety minutes of two alternating talking faces, occasionally interrupted by sporadic documentary shots, should deter viewers. However, it works thanks to the power of the story, which is hardly believable, but that's exactly how life writes itself. If someone made a feature film that I approached without knowing it was a portrayal of a true event, I would reject it as far-fetched. But the whole thing actually happened and I personally remember the brief news reports from foreign agencies. The 80% is not for acting or directing, but consider it recognition of the professionalism and humanity of two men who initially belonged to opposite sides of the barricade, only to later join forces and save human lives.

A theme squeezed from Frederick Forsyth's novels, two talking heads, and blockbuster thriller suspense. The subject is so pure that it's a wonder no Hollywood studios are holding a race to see who can get this on the screen first. 4 ½.
