When a working class family moves into a highrise, their lives begin to fall apart. Is it the location, or the mother? In this scathing family drama, the struggling life of a status-obsessed woman illustrates the high price of the pursuit of happiness. Director Wang Jing's works include internet murder mystery Invisible Killer and pharmaceutical thriller Vegetate, but in this film he tackles interpersonal drama head-on with a study of a tormented woman set during China's economic rise in the 1990s. Yan Bingyan, who brilliantly plays the tough but melancholy protagonist, is an in-demand actress whose range encompasses romantic comedy (Memory of Love) and juvenile suspense (Close to Me).
