A Sluggard and His Son addresses gender roles and identities in relation to the life of three-year-old Aapeli's father. After spending his life amongst "effeminate" boys, he is now a father and a house-owner. When a man becomes a father, something within him changes. Aapeli's father assures that the hero-fatherhood is only a role, through which Aapeli, once older, will see. The viewer also sees that underneath his role is a glow of a fatherly love.
