Un jeune photographe reporter Servais Mont rencontre sur un plateau de tournage Nadine Chevalier, une actrice ratée contrainte, pour survivre, de tourner dans des films pornographiques. Immédiatement séduit, Servais Mont se rend chez elle pour faire une série de photos. La jeune femme est mariée à Jacques, un être fragile, à la fois drôle et amer, qui fuit les réalités de la vie. Très attirés l'un vers l'autre, Nadine et Servais se revoient. Ce dernier décide d'aider Nadine à son insu. Il veut commanditer une pièce de théâtre dans laquelle elle aura enfin un rôle digne de son talent... (Les Acacias)

The meeting between the Polish director Andrzej Żuławski and Romy Schneider provided them both with an unusually powerful experience. While Romy had already established her roots in the French film scene and had already had stellar years in Austria and Germany and several years in Hollywood, Żuławski was making his first film outside of Poland. Their film together, That Most Important Thing: Love, is a raw depiction of life on the fringes of the film industry. It's very striking and, according to certain selections, one of the three best Romy Schneider films ever made. In the secondary literature, you can read about the process of catering to the actor's roles that Romy faced during filming.
