I was expecting something a little more Western-like in the classical sense, but this works too. It's still a journey of two men, or rather a man and a boy, which is sometimes very emotional and suits the setting and time period. The ending probably won't be too surprising, as it's heading in that direction, but I would still rate it slightly above average.
