Phillip Winter, ingénieur du son, part au Portugal rejoindre son ami cinéaste Friedrich, qui l'appelle au secours. Sur place, point de Friedrich. Dans la grande maison qu'il habitait, le cinéaste n'a laissé qu'un film inachevé. Phillip décide alors de mettre du son sur les images muettes et part ainsi à la recherche de son ami. While waiting for Antonioni (they were supposed to make Beyond the Clouds together), Wenders went to Lisbon to shoot one of the many symphonies of cities. It's a theme that we find in the 1920s in the USSR, Germany, and the Czech Republic, but I really don't feel that it suits the 1990s any better.
