En apparence, Marie a tout pour être heureuse: épouse de P.S. Kroyer, un des peintres les plus réputés du pays, elle est considérée comme une des plus belles femmes d'Europe. Avec leur fille Vibeke, ils évoluent dans le luxe et l'abondance. Mais les graves troubles psychologiques de Kroyer transforment la vie de Marie en un véritable cauchemar. The hard fate of a severely tested woman in a film that wanted to demonstrate that as much as possible to the audience. This film is full of helplessness, depression, sadness and resentment that just doesn’t stop. And it doesn’t stop even in a moment when for Maria’s sake I really wished it would. The Scandinavians delved into their interesting history in this movie and got stuck on emotions, which they truly master in their films, but have not made any further progress with them. Throughout the film, there is nothing left to do but suffer through Maria’s tough life with her, and the question is whether anyone can swallow this kind of film.
