War-time Stalingrad in 1942. On the bank of the Volga, the very young nurse Aňa meets the Soviet Captain Saburov. Aňa tells him about the plans she had before the war started. She wanted to study, get married and have children. When she now takes the wounded over the Volga into safety, she fears that she will die and that none of her plans will be fulfilled. They meet again after she has been rescued from the river exhausted. Saburov feeds her and lets her rest. The girl discovers with surprise that the captain, who seems an old and experienced man to her, was still a student only recently and is barely thirty years old. They meet for the third time when Aňa is wounded and going to be transported over the river. Aňa doesn't know how seriously she is wounded, but they both hope that their ways will meet in the future. The girl is taken away on a stretcher and Saburov kisses her goodbye. (texte officiel du distributeur)
