At 4.6 billion years old the Solar System is our solid secure home in an ever-changing universe. But how did it come to arrive at its current state? We trace the system's birth from a thin cloud of dust and gas. Shocked into action by the nearby supernova, the pull of gravity and natural rotation from this exploding star spun our system into a flat disc from which the Sun and planets coalesced. Over the course of 700 million years the planets jockeyed for position in orbit, dodging a brutal bombardment of asteroids and comets and eventually settling into the neat, stable system that scientists now believe may be a rarity in the universe.
