Two rival worlds: one of humans and one of insects. Both need space to live, and food to eat. But Humankind resists any encroachment onto its territory: we make frantic efforts to keep insects at a distance to safeguard our ‘territory’ and ‘environment’. In compelling ways, Bert Haanstra shows us how the battle between man and insects is played out. Different means of extermination are brought into this action, this act of ‘war’, both biological and chemical. The devastating insecticide DDT is enthusiastically thrown into the fight to control the insects, a pesticide which is now prohibited. Reason and human science should prevail over the bearers and spreaders of disease. Daring camera positions and angles, as exemplified by a prop plane soaring through swarms of locusts, give this documentary its added excellence. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
