Christian Ullmen and Moritz Bleibtreu portray, respectively, Michael and Bruno, half brothers who have each adjusted poorly to adult life, thanks in no small part to a cracked upbringing by their eccentric, social dropout mother. As the story opens, each brother experiences a personal crisis. Geneticist Michael returns to his work in cloning after an extended period away from his Irish laboratory, but suffers in quiet desperation from his intense inner loneliness; he must soon leave the lab once again and head back to his hometown, where his grandmother's corpse is being disinterred from a cemetery. Upon arrival, he reencounters Annabelle (Franka Potente), an adolescent crush to whom he was never before able to express his romantic yearnings; they consummate an intense erotic affair, and remain together, but a troubled pregnancy renders her infertile and makes family conception an utter impossibility. Meanwhile, high school teacher Bruno (a married husband and father) is driven completely around the bend by sexual yearnings for his female students, and consequently suffers from a nervous breakdown; he checks himself into a sanitarium, then heads off on a bender at a swingers' retreat with a new lover, Christiane (Martina Gedeck) - but their pleasure is all too short-lived. Les Allemands peuvent être fichtrement bons en cinéma et ce film ne fait que le confirmer. De plus, il s’agit d’une transposition au grand écran d’un roman français, ce que je considère personnellement comme un exercice extrêmement ardu, surtout quand le réalisateur et les acteurs n’ont pas la même nationalité que l’écrivain du modèle littéraire. Eh bien, chapeau ! La distribution est efficace, dominée par le duo Bleibtreu/Gedeck et l’histoire est à la fois forte et intéressante. J’ai été happé immédiatement et n’ai pas décroché jusqu’à la fin.

Peut-être que dans un avenir lointain ou proche, il sera vraiment possible de rationaliser l'amour et la reproduction humaine et de les insérer dans une équation à la manière de Heisenberg ou de Bohr, mais d'ici là, nous sommes tous condamnés à nous guider par notre inconscient, surtout par le désir sexuel - cette fois-ci à la manière de Sigmund Freud. Le libido est vraiment le principal moteur de motivation des deux personnages principaux, bien qu'il se manifeste différemment chez chacun, et il est adroitement secondé par une autre maxime psychiatrique célèbre du style "Parlez-moi de votre mère." De cette fermentation est née deux personnalités, dont la comparaison pourrait suggérer que l'approche rationnelle et objective de la sexualité du frère-scientifique l'emporte plutôt sur la passion sexuelle qui frise l'obsession du frère-enseignant. Peut-on toutefois dire cela après avoir visionné les dernières minutes du film ?

An interesting psychological drama filmed in a way that everyone can choose their own interpretation and interpret the message of the film in their own way. Some of the motifs didn't resonate with me, but others more than made up for it. The film's strength lies in the casting of German stars who have contributed to the rise of German cinema in the last decade. Interesting characters, casual dialogues about somewhat crazy problems, and sexual openness that may have ventured into controversial positions if it were made by another director and screenwriter. It is the story of two stepbrothers, their reconciliation with an unscrupulous and selfish narcissistic mother, and their search for happiness and a suitable partner. Overall impression: 75%. For me, the film fluctuates between comically lightened and tragically exposed.
