Au début des années 60 au Nouveau Mexique, Jack Burns, un cow-boy romantique vit en marge de son temps. Mal à l'aise dans l'Amérique du progrès, il refuse la technologie moderne. Il a pour seule compagnie sa jument, baptisée Whisky. Jadis amoureux de la belle Jerry, il n'a cependant jamais voulu lui sacrifier sa liberté. De passage dans la ville où ils se sont rencontrés, le cow-boy décide de lui rendre visite. Il apprend alors que Jerry a épousé Paul Bondi, un ami d'enfance, et que ce dernier est en prison. Jack veut à tout prix l'aider à s'évader mais une bagarre éclate et il rejoint Paul dans sa cellule. Avec audace, le cow-boy parvient néanmoins à s'enfuir peu après et se dirige sans tarder vers la frontière mexicaine où il va être pouchassé par le shérif Bondi et ses hommes en hélicoptère...
