Countess Duday Mária's meeting with Liszt Ferenc makes her change her mind choosing a musician's career rather than getting married. She leaves behind her fiancé, baron Eötvös, a military officer, to become Liszt's student in Weimar. Once there, she falls in love with Hanz Wendland Liszt's most gifted student. The young pianist is challenged into a duel by the jealous baron. During the duel, the pianist's hand is seriously injured, so he has to give up his career as a pianist. The lovers go their own way each and meet only years later at a concert in Budapest with Wendland performing as the conductor and Mária playing the piano at the request of Liszt himself.
