A la frontière américano-mexicaine, un avion en piteux état se pose dans un champ. Le pilote, Lee Arnold, remet des armes au capitaine Pancho Ramirez, chef des insurgés Colorados contre le président mexicain Madero. En remerciements, Ramirez lui remet une ceinture pleine d'or. Accueilli pour la nuit par le forgeron du village, Lee fait la connaissance de Fina, la fille de la maison, dont il s'éprend. Mais le lendemain, le village est encerclé par les troupes de Ramirez qui saccagent, tuent et violent. Non loin de là, Pancho Villa, qui a assisté au carnage, donne à ses hommes l'ordre d'attaquer par surprise les troupes de Ramirez et les fait prisonniers. Pedro, son lieutenant, les abat. Prisonnier avec les autres, le pilote américain est horrifié par une telle barbarie et propose un marché à Villa. Petit à petit, une amitié naît entre les deux hommes...
