Tuomas Linna is doing research for his dissertation on how foreigners are treated in Finland. For field research, he borrows the identity of his Ingushetian friend, Omar Ghaala. Dressed up as Omar, Tuomas meets and falls in love with Hanne, a Finnish teacher at a language school for immigrants. Hanne falls in love with Omar too, and Tuomas can't think of a way to reveal his true identity.

When Tuomas tries to make an impression on Hanne as his real self, with no masks, the situation turns on its head and, along with a series of awkward misunderstandings, Hanne ends up hating Tuomas. At the same time, Hanne falls more and more passionately in love with Omar. Before Tuomas manages to tell Hanne the truth, Omar's past catches him in a headlock. Tuomas finds himself caught up in a relationship mess the real Omar has left behind him. A showdown with the Rintaperkiö family defending its honor awaits for him in the backward Ostrobothnian countryside.

Hanne's love for Omar and Tuomas is put to trial when the coil of misunderstandings and white lies finally starts unraveling. In a Foreign Land is a breathtakingly fast comedy of masquerading and identity – and of love, a foreign land to those who get lost in it. (texte officiel du distributeur)
