Beautiful but deadly, vipers kill more people than any other animal. Masters of ambush, their domain stretches from the hottest deserts – home to the side-winding rattlesnake and pop-eyed Perenguey's adder – to the frozen arctic tundra, where giant black adders roam. Vipers are state-of-the-art predators equipped with the largest of all snake fangs and with venom containing up to fifty deadly ingredients. But some animals, and people, have found ingenious ways to survive alongside deadly vipers. Now that medical science is beginning to discover the healing power of venom, vipers may turn out to be far more good than evil. (BBC)
