Hunters on a White Field

Three men go on an extended weekend hunting trip deep in the Swedish forest. Gregor and Henrik are old friends and more experienced hunters, while Alex is a novice (and Gregor’s protégé at work). Their trip is initially greeted by success on the hunt, sharpening their instincts in the field and drumming up a rivalry between the three men. But one day all the animals vanish without a trace, leaving the forest eerily quiet and the men with nothing to hunt, which simply won’t do. Spurred on by overactive male bravado, the misguided macho inclination to compare themselves to men of the past, and a bit of natural hallucinogens the trio find a way for the hunt to continue…even in a forest without animals. Writer-Director Sarah Gyllenstierna’s debut feature is a thrilling, heady interrogation of people’s capacity for self- delusion and destruction. With a winning mixture of tension and humor, the film does a remarkable job at keeping the audience off-balance as a sense of mystery pervades the familiar, yet slightly incomprehensible, world Gyllenstierna creates. Featuring gorgeous cinematography and compelling performances from the three leads, Hunters on a White Field is a fascinating, tension-filled exploration of masculinity. (Tribeca Film Festival)
