Alexandre est un jeune intellectuel oisif qui passe ses journées à flâner dans le Quartier Latin. Il vit dans la chambre de bonne de Marie, son amante à qui il aime rappeler qu’elle est plus âgée que lui. Un jour, alors qu’il est au café des Deux Magots où il a ses habitudes, Alexandre croise Veronika, une jeune infirmière. Il entame alors une liaison avec elle, et ne s’embarrasse pas de cacher la situation à ses deux concubines. A long movie where there is a lot of talking, of course passionately, and everything makes sense. However, I still didn't enjoy it and it just seemed too long to me. I would rather watch "Titanic" again than this, and I never had to watch "Titanic". I guess it's because of how influenced I am by the American style of filmmaking and approach to movies.

The Mother and the Whore is an essential “French gab-fest”, but unlike most of its successors and imitators (including Wes Anderson), it not only doesn’t take itself so deadly seriously, but it also doesn’t hesitate to step into the waters of disarming immediacy and shallowness. As a result, this mammoth film about the delicate subject of amorous relationships can be simultaneously romantic and caustic, as well as tragic and playful.
