Onegin (Fiennes) is a bored, unaffected St. Petersburg aristocrat who inherits his uncle's large estate. When he rejects the advances of his neighbor Tatyana (Tyler), her sister's fiance considers this an offense worth fighting over. In a senseless, tragic duel, Onegin prevails. Six years later, Onegin returns to St. Petersburg and is reintroduced to Tatyana. This time, he falls helplessly in love with her and discovers, crushingly, that she has already married and has no intention on reciprocating his emotions. (texte officiel du distributeur)

anglais Certainly a properly pompous spectacle that faithfully represents the end of the 18th century with all its grandiosity, stiffness, and minimalism, when emotions were expressed briefly, nobly, and with appropriate form, while not being overly discussed. In this case, it is worth getting carried away by the impressive performances, the phenomenal camera work, and the brutally uncompromising editing in the style of "three years later, but you can figure it out yourself." So, perhaps a film that is a bit too narratively based on a more grandiose source, but as a chamber piece, it is very effective. I felt those emotions and perspectives, the inevitability was palpable, and the sense of formal aesthetics cannot be denied. ()
