Berend Iván is an engineer, displaying high expertise in producing "black diamonds", i.e. coal, in the mine at Bondavár he inherited from his father. He falls in love with Evila, a beautiful girl, daughter of a miner, but his amorous advances are not encouraged as she is fearful of enraging her bridegroom, a drunkard. Kaulmann Félix, a banker from Vienna, a man rather too greedy for money, buys up the whole mining district of Bondavölgy. Though unable to get hold of Berend's mine, he takes Evila with him to Vienna to use her for business purposes. His plan is a success, he soon opens a new mine, and he successfully lures Berend's best workers to this new place. Revenge does, however, have the final word when Evila's jealous bridegroom blows up the new mine. Kaulmann, now gone bankrupt, commits suicide. Evila pretends to have also committed suicide and returns to Berend Iván, who, having successfully put out a fire in the mine, buys the now valueless shares of the blown-up mine.
