An ophthalmologist's confession is interrupted when the priest attending him leaves on an emergency. After his absolution is postponed, he decides to return to his office. On the way, he is hit by a car and fatally wounded. From that moment on, his immortal soul is cast into a medieval-looking purgatory populated by grotesque creatures: Blemmyes and devils.
