1933. Alexandre Stavisky, conseiller financier, propriétaire d'une écurie de courses, d'un groupe de presse et d'un théâtre, est un escroc sympathique qui mène une vie mondaine soutenue avec sa compagne, la belle Arlette. A plusieurs reprises, ses amitiés politiques lui ont évité d'épineuses difficultés avec la justice. Néanmoins, son secrétaire ne laisse pas de s'inquiéter devant sa comptabilité défectueuse. D'autant plus que l'inspecteur Bony a réuni un dossier compromettant. Le scandale éclate avec l'affaire des faux bons du Crédit municipal de Bayonne. Stavisky s'enfuit alors à Chamonix où son cadavre est retouvé le 8 janvier 1934. Selon la thèse officielle, il s'agit d'un suicide. Les remous soulevés par l'affaire ne seront pas sans conséquences sur le séjour de Trotsky alors en exil en France. (StudioCanal)
