Curtis is a prince who, as a child, was ordered killed by those who wanted the throne for themselves. Sloane, the thief ordered to kill Curtis, instead decided to raise him, teaching him a life of crime. Mixed in with a plot to restore him to rightful place as ruler is a romance with fellow thief Laurie, who has made off with the prized Pearl of Fatima. A typical adventure in the Arabian Nights vein, taken from a story written, surprisingly, by the principal exponent of American naturalism in literature, Theodore Dreiser, who, at the time, was drifting into the mystic strain that characterized his later years.
