What surgeons thought to be a tumor growing on the neck of patient Karen Tandy is actually a fetus growing at an abnormally accelerated rate. But when Karen reaches out to former lover and phony psychic Harry Erskine, he discovers that she is possessed by the reincarnation of a 400-year old Native American demon. Now with the help of a modern-day medicine man, Erskine must survive this ancient evil's rampage of shocking violence, and forever destroy the enraged beast known as the Manitou. Lightweight and increasingly overdone and stupid the closer we get to the end. The premise is excellent, but it should have been used in a serious manner à la The Exorcist. The lightness just doesn't do it justice, though admittedly it doesn't outright kill it.

The Canadian-American film The Manitou has a great build-up in the sense of how bizarre it becomes, but also in the sense of how repulsive it is. It becomes more and more disgusting and bizarre. And that's what I really liked about it. In addition, we also get Tony Curtis, who could act even then and didn't turn down roles that other movie greats might have turned down. I enjoyed the film, but I'm glad it can’t be compared to the book yet.
