As part of the educational series Lettres on literature, Rohmer evoked the atmosphere of the late 19th century and simulated an extensive interview with Stéphane Mallarmé. Although the questions are more or less made up, the answers come from period materials. The film is typically Rohmer in its emphasis on the word and its visual representation.
