South Sudan is a country where periods of civil war alternate with times of fragile peace. The film tells the story of a former soldier and diplomat who is determined to teach local fighters the “rules of war” in case the conflict flares up again. Albert Schoneveld is a Red Cross worker whose task it is to conduct workshops on the rules of war for local rebel groups. Firstly, there is the need to explain to soldiers the logic of protecting civilians during any conflict. Schoneveld’s questions also stimulate thinking about the consequences of war, ethical principles, and one’s own role in the army. The documentary shows his effort to find order and determination to bring more humanity into the conflicts that paralyse the region. The film metaphorically portrays the meeting of two worlds, as well as the clash between the colonial past and the neo-colonial present. (One World)
