Dans ce portrait inspiré, Jean-Baptiste Péretié nous immerge, au fil de formidables archives, dans le New York des années 1970 qui a tant nourri sa créativité. En état de grâce, le comédien est alors plébiscité par le nouvel Hollywood pour le meilleur, comme en témoignent ici, au travers d’extraits, quelques morceaux de bravoure de ses films emblématiques. Mais ce qui rend si attachant ce monstre sacré fou de Shakespeare − auteur d’un documentaire sur son personnage fétiche de Richard III (Looking for Richard) −, c’est sa propension à se perdre et à fuir succès et honneurs. D’éclipses en fracassants retours − L'impasse de Brian De Palma, ou Révélations de Michael Mann −, un parcours somme toute très cinématographique. (Arte)

Is there an Al, last name Coholic? Sorry, Pacino? The mean streets of New York, Italian-American roots, growing up with his mother after his parents' divorce, love for films, and the Actor's Studio. There are many connections with his friend and colleague De Niro, but the strongest aspect of this documentary is its ability to capture how the Bronx native’s personal struggles and inner restlessness were mirrored in his early major roles. The documentary covers two key points in his career: the pre-shot scene of the killing of two mafia goons in The Godfather, which Pacino used to convince skeptical producers, and the beginning of a new era where, dressed in a cocaine suit, he was no longer just a New Yorker, but the world was definitively his.
