King Erik of Sweden is attracted by Karin, the daughter of a common soldier. Karin, being a woman of the people, is exploited by Göran Persson, who wants to reduce the influence of the nobles. Karin gives birth to two children by Erik, but he wants to marry Queen Elisabeth I of England. When that proves impossible, he falls more and more under the influence of Persson and Karin.
