As with many major human discoveries, vaccines’ road from speculation to success has been rocky. Praiseworthy efforts to eliminate devastating diseases have been accompanied by prejudice and ethically unacceptable practices. David Olusoga and Steven Johnson guide us through the key events in creating the little miracle known as vaccination. In this film, viewers learn about the roots of this invention that has contributed to prolonging our lives and how history repeats itself when this topic is increasingly relevant again. Privilege exists alongside shortage, as well as scientifically based information alongside conspiracy theories. Mankind has come a long way from smallpox, but the social dimensions of vaccinations are still full of rigors. (Academia Film Olomouc)
