Biographie

Cary Joji Fukunaga (b. 1977, Oakland, California) studied at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His work as a screenwriter, director, and cinematographer has taken him all over the globe – beyond the Arctic circle, to Haiti and to West Africa.

In 2005, the Sundance festival screened his short directorial debut Victoria para Chino, for which he also wrote the screenplay. The film won more than 20 international awards, including a student Oscar and special mention from BAFTA Los Angeles. Both his feature-film debut Sin nombre (2008 – awards for directing and cinematography at Sundance) and his subsequent adaptation of the classic novel Jane Eyre (2011) were shown at Karlovy Vary. Visitors to KVIFF 49 could also see Fukunaga's series "True Detective" (2014).
