Biographie

Rodrigo García was born in Bogotá, Colombia, in 1959, and grew up in Mexico City. His credits as director of photography include Danzón (directed by María Novaro), Mi Vida Loca (directed by Allison Anders), and Gia (directed by Michael Cristofer). García has since directed a variety of independent films, including the award-winning Nine Lives; the three-time Academy Award-nominated feature Albert Nobbs, starring Glenn Close; and Mother and Child, starring Annette Bening, Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson. In 2000, García’s first film as a writer and director, Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her, won the Un Certain Regard Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. His more recent film, Last Days in the Desert, was premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.

Among his television credits are the cable series In Treatment, on which he served as executive producer and showrunner for the first season and received a Writers Guild of America Award in the New Series category. Other TV credits include The Sopranos and Six Feet Under, as well as the pilots of Carnivàle and Big Love, the latter earning him an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.

García is the Co-Chief Executive Officer of Indigenous Media, a next generation digital studio focused on producing original content for digital and emerging platforms worldwide, in addition to developing and operating multi-platform content brands. He is also the Co-Creator of WIGS, a digital drama channel offering over 180 episodes of scripted content, including 15 high-end original series, 7 short films, and 10 documentaries, all starring female leads. García wrote and directed the WIGS series Blue (starring Julia Stiles) and Christine (starring America Ferrera), as well as the shorts Serena (starring Jennifer Garner and Alfred Molina) and Celia (starring Allison Janney and Dakota Fanning).

In Last Days in the Desert, Ewan McGregor is outstanding as Jesus – and the Devil – in an imagined chapter from his 40 days of fasting and praying in the desert. Amid a harsh landscape, Jesus encounters a family in crisis (Ciarán Hinds, Tye Sheridan, and Ayelet Zurer) and chooses to entangle himself in their lives, a decision that forces him into a powerful confrontation with his own destiny. Beautifully crafted, Last Days in the Desert is a visually extraordinary reimagining of a biblical chapter and a thought-provoking character study, featuring remarkable performances and exceptional cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki.
