Biographie

Sally Hawkins is a British actress best known for her role as Susan in Mike Leigh’s Academy Award-nominated film Vera Drake and as Sue Trinder in the BBC’s Fingersmith (2005). Since then she has gone on to play the lead in another BBC production, Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky and star as Anne Elliot in ITV’s new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion, for which she won Best Actress at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival.

Hawkins’ film credits include Mike Leigh’s All or Nothing, the acclaimed thriller Layer Cake, The Painted Veil (with Naomi Watts, Edward Norton and Liev Schreiber) and upcoming, Waz. She is currently working on a new film with Mike Leigh.

The daughter of well-known authors and illustrators of children’s books, Jaqui and Colin Hawkins, Sally studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in London, graduating in 1998. Her stage work includes “As You Like It,” “The Whore of Babylon,” “Accidental Death of an Anarchist,” “Svejk,” “The Dybbuk,” “Romeo and Juliet” (as Juliet), “The Cherry Orchard,” “Perapalas,” “Much Ado About Nothing,” “A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream,” “Misconceptions,” “The Way of the World,” “Country Music,” “The House of Bernarda Alba,” and “The Winterling.”

On television, Hawkins has been seen Tipping the Velvet, Promoted to Glory, Byron, Bunk Bed Boys, The Young Visitors, Little Britain, Dinos After Dark, 20,000 Streets Under the Sky, Shiny Shiny Bright New Hole in My Heart, and Man to Man with Dean Learner.

Hawkins is also a comedy writer. She contributed to the Radio 4 sketch comedy show, Concrete Cow, and is the co-creator and star of the British TV series The Everglades.
