Biographie
Joaquín Cosío was born in Nayarit Mexico and moved to Ciudad Juarez at a young age, where he began his work as a stage actor in 1983, performing in over 70 plays and over 1000 performances. He made his film debut in 2001, and he has since participated in over 60 feature films and TV shows, including the HBO comedy Eastbound and Down and opposite Daniel Craig in the film: Quantum of Solace. He has been nominated for the Mexican Academy Awards (“Arieles”) four times; in 2005 for his portrayal of “Mascarita” in the Mexican hit Matando Cabos, in 2011 for his work in the highly acclaimed film El Infierno, for which he won his first Ariel and also the National Board of Cinema’s award for Best Actor, and in 2013 for his work in the hit Mexican comedy Pastorela. His most recent Ariel nomination was in 2017 for his work in The Thin Yellow Line.
An in-demand actor in Hollywood too, Joaquín has starred in Oliver Stone’s Savages alongside Benicio del Toro, Chris Weitz’s Academy Award nominated A Better Life and Disney’s The Lone Ranger opposite Johnny Depp. In 2018 Joaquín was in Netflix’s smash hit Narcos: México alongside Diego Luna and Michael Peña. Joaquín closed 2018 by voicing legendary Marvel villain “Scorpion” in the Academy Award-winning animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. In 2019 he was in Emilio Portes’ horror thriller Beelzebuth opposite Tobin Bell (Saw). 2020 is already shaping up to be one of the most important years in Joaquín’s career as he returns for Season 2 of Narcos: México, a starring role in Amazon Studios’ new series CDMX, and the long awaited sequel to Matando Cabos, as well as his first starring role in a US TV series in the upcoming Netflix dramedy Gentefied, and as Aztec God “Camazotz” in a new animated series for Netflix, Maya and the Three alongside Diego Luna, Alfred Molina and Zoe Saldana.
