Biographie

Born in Nara prefecture, Japan in 1949, Banmei Takahashi dropped out of university to begin his directing career in "pink films" (soft-core erotic films), making his debut in the genre with FUJO BOKOHAN DASSO (1972). After a decade in the genre, he made his first "general" feature in 1982, TATOO ARI, then specialized in "straight-to-video" films for several years before returning to theatrical fare. Among his credits: OKAMI (1982), DOOR (1988), SUMMER OF THE YOUNG LIONS (1991), A NEW LOVE IN TOKYO (1994, shown at the MWFF), RAIN OF LIGHT (2001), HIBI (2004), ZEN (2008) and BOX - THE HAKAMADA CASE (2010), also shown at the MWFF.
