Biographie

He studied film and TV at the National University of Colombia. At the age of 23, he made his debut feature, La sombra del caminante (The Wandering Shadows, 2004), which won 15 awards and was selected for more than 80 international film festivals. His second film, Los viajes del viento (The Wind Journeys, 2009), was in the official selection of the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, as well as at film festivals such as Toronto, London, Rotterdam, San Sebastián, Jerusalem, Havana, and Hong Kong. His third film, El abrazo de la serpiente (Embrace of the Serpent, 2015), screened in the Directors’ Fortnight section at Cannes, where it won the CICAE Award, and went on to become the first Colombian film ever nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. It was followed by Pájaros de verano (Birds of Passage, 2018), co-directed with long time producing partner Cristina Gallego; it was the opening film of the Directors’ Fortnight and shortlisted for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar®. It went on to win more than 30 international awards, including Best Latin American Film of the Year at the Fénix Awards. All of Guerra’s films have been selected as Colombia’s entry for Best Foreign Language film and have been distributed in over 60 countries. Waiting for the Barbarians is the first English-language film directed by Ciro Guerra.
