He graduated from Iceland’s Academy of the Arts and then moved to Denmark and studied screenwriting. His four short films as a director participated in more than two hundred festivals and won more than fifty international awards, such as a special mention in the Official Selection at Cannes and a nomination at the European Film Awards for Hvalfjörður (2013). After making his feature debut, Heartstone, during his time at the Cannes Cinéfondation Residence, the film premiered in competition at the Venice Days section of the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Queer Lion. His second feature film, Beautiful Beings (2022), won the Europa Cinemas Label at the Berlin Festival.
