Alfie, le drageur (1966)

anglais Alfie's a bastard. An egotistical jerk who's lucky to have Michael Caine's face. And this film is strange. You watch the main (anti) hero playing with women, i.e., he only needs them when it suits him, and he has no problem kicking one or the other of them out if he gets tired of them. He's just having fun. Alfie's story is a chilling conversation film that is not meant to enlighten the viewer, and it is up to everyone what they take from it. The biggest positive is of course Caine in the lead role, all the women are chosen accurately, the cinematography of Czech Otto Heller is nice. I also liked the lightness of the story - the moments when Alfie speaks to the camera directly to the audience ("Have you all settled in yet? Now you're probably waiting for long, stupid headlines. There won't be any."). Four and a half.

Wiedźmin (2002) (série)

anglais A series during which I always looked forward to the next episode. The biggest pros are Michał Żebrowski (why the hell isn't he in Hollywood yet?), great music and tastefully chosen exteriors. The story was really good in the first parts and I had nothing to complain about (I still remember the amazingly atmospheric part with the devil in the field) - but then the Poles started to run out of breath, which they corrected only in the last two parts. Additionally: It has a magically mystical touch, and Sapkowski will also be recognized by readers of the book, but it's just that... It could have been even better. Three and a half rounded up thanks to Yennefer.

Astro Boy (2009)

anglais Tin-pot revolutionaries, well-chosen voice actors, music by John Ottman. All of this keeps the otherwise mediocre (and to me very unlikeable) Astro Boy from a two-star rating.

Zodiac (2007)

anglais Fincher is a master of atmosphere, no doubt about it. I enjoyed Zodiac exactly the way I was supposed to... But if I hadn't read the book, a lot of things would probably have remained a mystery to me, and the film might have seemed too muddled and maybe even boring, for all I know. Fortunately, I did read it. Five stars for a perfect transfer from paper to filmstrip.

Dinosaurs (1991) (série)

anglais Now that's something! Just a couple of YouTube clips and you remember how much you loved this show. The sitcom-ness mixing the Simpsons with the Flintstones is amazing, as is the "Baby" kid and his "You’re not mommy!", Earl, his sidekick Roy... Please start showing Dinosaurs on TV again, or at least have someone release it on DVD. Don't let them go extinct!

Daredevil (2003)

anglais I don't know what it is, but in hindsight, Daredevil isn't that bad anymore. It's simply a classic comic book movie with extremely boring action, but a few good moments and jokes, with a wooden Ben Affleck, a beautiful Jennifer Garner and Michael Clarke Duncan, who was perfect as Kingpin. Nothing groundbreaking, but still better than Ghost Rider.

King Kong (1933)

anglais Finally, finally, finally, finally... Thanks to the stunningly good 2DVD release of the original King Kong, I watched the film in its original version and it was worth it. Five stars are most deserved - there is simply no better monster movie than this (this year) seventy-seven year old classic. Great special effects, atmosphere, actors (especially Bruce Cabot is as good as it gets), Steiner's music, literally timeless direction and great "how the hell did they do that?" special effects. It's great!

California Hôtel (1978)

anglais A great, star-studded conversation piece that combines crackling humor with heaps of cynical innuendo and insults, as well as partner drama. I can't say which of the stories I liked the most, because each one had something to it. In any case, Neil Simon deserves huge praise - the dialogue the man has come up with for California Suite should be studied.

Hantise (1999)

anglais I promise I'll listen to my friends next time they give me advice like "Don't watch The Haunting, it's stupid, a waste of time". God, that WAS stupid. To the point it surprised me. A horror movie that's not scary... mysteries that aren't mysterious... actors who barely act at all...basically crap. One star for the design of the (un)haunted mansion, the second for Goldsmith's music, which does make something out of the zero atmosphere here and there. But there's not much there.

L'Assistant du vampire (2009)

anglais I don't know the book, so (perhaps fortunately) I can't compare them, but: All of the monsters that appeared in the film were really interesting (it's a pity that some of them didn't get more space), with Reilly's vampire being the best, followed by Dafoe, Salma Hayek and Jane Krakowski (I could watch these two all the time). The main character is such a typical teenager who comes to happiness and moral lessons, while the rest of the characters (except for two memorable villains) are worthless. Including those demented parents. I liked the music, the special effects and the visuals are decent... It works perfect as relaxation. Undemanding fun with some really good jokes by John C. Reilly. Three and a half = above average.
