Akujaku reidžó level 99: Wataši wa ura boss desu ga maó de wa arimasen (2024) (série)

anglais Seriously, whoever created those 3DCG monster models needs a lifetime ban from working on a computer. The dragon, the skeletons... it's the kind of terrible that should never be allowed in anime. Now that I've got that off my chest, let's dive in. The story was enjoyable, though not exactly groundbreaking. The first episode had a neat twist, but after that, it felt rushed at times. The resolution of the main heroine's romance, for example, seemed to happen out of nowhere, which felt unnatural. The ending didn't leave me with any great sense of satisfaction either. I did like the main heroine, though. She reminded me of a slightly smarter version of Mashle in a skirt. The narrative style from her perspective, with those internal dialogues, made her more interesting and likable to me. Of the other characters, Patrick stood out. This was largely because the three men around  Alicia — princemagiciansoldier — seemed so poorly written in comparison. They were so bad they brought to mind The Rising of the Shield Hero, where the protagonist's charisma stands out because the other heroes are insufferable and dumb. With that kind of "material" here, Patrick really shined. As for the humor, I chuckled occasionally, though sometimes it was a bit hit or miss. At least there weren't any moments where a joke felt outright stupid or cringey. In the end, it's a pretty decent series, but it has some glaring flaws in terms of pace, animation, and characters. It entertained me more than it bored or annoyed me, but I can't give it more than a 5.5/10.

Ao no Exorcist - Shimane Illuminati Hen (2024) (saison)

anglais It's been seven long years since the Okumura brothers and their battle against Satan graced our screens, and I'm pleased to say that this series still holds my interest even after such a long break. This time around, the focus on Izumo, whom I've always favored (definitely more than Shiemi), was a welcome change, and her story managed to tug at my heartstrings. The mysterious Illuminati organization, led by Lucifer, had me intrigued. I found myself wondering about Mephisto's schemes, and the unpredictable Shima kept me entertained. But above all, I was eagerly anticipating the inevitable downfall of one of the most annoying and despicable antagonists in Blue Exorcist - that swine, sorry, Doctor Gedouin, finally getting what he deserves. While Blue Exorcist may not quite measure up to modern shounen anime in terms of its battles, they're still well-animated and engaging. Personally, I'm not disappointed. I appreciate the atmospheric and mysterious tone of the story, which kept me hooked throughout. So, all in all, I quite enjoyed what I saw, and I'm grateful that we won't have to wait as long for another season this time around. 7.2/10

Avatar : Le dernier maître de l'air (2024) (série)

anglais I have to say, the adaptation exceeded my expectations. Visually, it's absolutely captivating, with top-notch effects The music sounds familiar thanks to the collaboration with Nickelodeon. The casting was spot-on for the most part; I had no trouble recognizing all the characters, despite some minor changes that were announced beforehand. These changes didn't hinder the final result at all. I was pleasantly surprised by some unexpected twists, especially the early introduction of a key character from the original animated series who didn't play a crucial role until later seasons. This adaptation gives us solid character development, moving away from the one-dimensional villain portrayal we saw in the original series. On one hand, this live-action version stays true to the source material, preserving the magic of the story. On the other hand, it weaves events together in interesting ways, placing dialogues in different spots than I remembered. Sometimes this worked really well, other times it didn't quite have the impact, possibly due to pacing issues. One standout example is the part around Omashu, where we see elements from about four different episodes of the original series condensed into two episodes. The storylines don't unfold sequentially as they did before, but surprisingly, it all holds together quite well. I found myself really enjoying this reimagined part of the series. In short, it's still mostly the Avatar that I loved so much, far better than the film adaptation from 2010. Yet, it also has its own identity with added elements, omissions, and rearrangements. Personally, I appreciate this deviation from a strict 1:1 remake; it keeps things fresh and interesting. Overall, I'm highly satisfied and eagerly anticipating the adaptations of the second and third books. 8/10

Boku no kokoro no jabai jacu - Season 2 (2024) (saison)

anglais I had high hopes going in, but The Dangers in My Heart surpassed all expectations. The final episode was nothing short of brilliant, earning a solid 10/10 from me. The way the two main characters bared their hearts, revealing why they fell in love, felt so genuine and beautifully fitting with everything we've seen throughout not just this season, but the entire series. From the very first season, the show had me hooked. It delved into the gradual transformation of two vastly different personalities finding their way to each other. The second season brilliantly builds upon this foundation, deepening their relationship, throwing new obstacles in their path, and culminating in a breathtaking finale. What stood out the most for me? Perhaps it was how the main character, despite his insecurities and fears, ultimately grasped what needed to be done at a crucial moment, revealing a surprising maturity. On the other hand, the main female character, often seeming confident but struggling with her own uncertainties, felt incredibly relatable. The series beautifully portrays the conflicts of adolescence — the clash between the weight of adulthood's responsibilities and the carefree naivety of childhood. It's a delicate balance that's masterfully executed, making everything the characters do feel utterly believable. Moments like Ichikawa's confrontation with his past self are some of the series' most powerful. Both main characters are exceptionally well-written, with their own strengths and weaknesses. Watching them grow, both individually and in their relationship, is what kept me rooting for them throughout. Sure, it gets cringy and awkward at times, but that's part of the charm — reminiscent of those first romances we've all experienced. The animation is top-notch, complemented by an even better musical score. In short, I was thoroughly enthralled by the show. I hope for more episodes because this feels like just the beginning of a relationship that promises to be as intriguing as the journey to it. 9.5/10

Buččigiri?! (2024) (série)

anglais This original series starts off with an interesting character design, and it has a lot of energy. However, it quickly loses steam. The main hero's constant foolery, which is amusing at first, soon becomes tiresome and downright annoying after about 11 episodes. Then, out of the blue, he decides to change his tune, but because his character is so heavily built on his foolishness, this sudden shift doesn't really work. For me, the most intriguing character turned out to be Matakara, who was fighting more than the fists of his opponents in the story. However, even his inner struggles didn't quite resonate as deeply as I hoped. Overall, it's a bit of a letdown. While beautifully animated with great voice acting and a nice beginning, the series fails to deliver much substance. 5/10

Čiju mahó no mačigatta cukaikata (2024) (série)

anglais When I first heard about this "battle healer," I expected just another run-of-the-mill isekai anime. But to my surprise, this series managed to exceed my expectations in almost every way. Right from the first episode, I was drawn to the array of likable characters. Our trio of heroes from our world are all distinct and cool in their own ways, making it easy to connect with each of them. The inhabitants of this fantasy kingdom are no exception, whether it's the relatively sensible king, the kind-hearted princess, or the leader of the healers, Rose. Visually, the show is quite appealing, with engaging interactions between the characters. The main hero undergoes genuine training here (no becoming overpowered within five minutes!), and I appreciated the reasonable explanation of why healing abilities combined with combat training are so impressive. The concept of how these abilities can be utilized, in line with the series' title, was also intriguing. The story itself has clearly been crafted with care, much like the characters. It has a solid plot that keeps everything together and left me curious about what would unfold next. While the animation could use some improvement, I found it decent overall, and the music in the series added a nice touch. Overall, I'd give it a 7.3/10, and I would definitely be interested in seeing more episodes.

Dosanko Gal wa Namara Menkoi (2024) (série)

anglais Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! and they might have their charm for some, but for me, the show fell flat and landed squarely in average territory. The heroines are decent enough, but the main hero mostly comes off as pathetic, almost annoyingly so. He's just a dull goody-goody, and his rizz comes solely from him being from Tokyo! Frankly, I don't see the appeal. But it wasn't just Cubasa who rubbed me the wrong way here. Let's not forget his grandma, who can cure indecent thoughts with a traditional tea ceremony and is a classic example of conservative (almost fossilized) thinking. Living with her? No thanks. But it's because I actually have a personality, unlike Cubasa. On top of that, the story is packed with clichés, blushing, and the main hero's panicked outbursts. It's all been done before, nothing groundbreaking here. So as I said, I get that the series might have good ratings because, sure, Hokkaido gals are cute. But with everything else into the mix, it's not worth more than a 5/10 for me.

Džaku-chara Tomozaki-kun - 2nd Stage (2024) (saison)

anglais I really appreciate how this series takes the chaos of high school life and puts it into relatable video game terms. It's like a guidebook for the socially awkward, offering up tips and tricks that could genuinely work. Most of what the series presents feels believable to me, and that's part of what makes it so enjoyable. The first half of the second season, with its focus on bullying, was particularly captivating. The solution to the problem, centered around gradually shifting the overall atmosphere within the class, felt genuine and likable. It was an engaging and satisfying arc. Moving into the second half, where the main hero finally chooses his girlfriend, I found myself somewhat conflicted. My main issue lies in the portrayal of rational thinking in matters of romance and emotions. Love doesn't always follow a logical path, and while there were some good pieces of advice sprinkled in, I struggled to fully buy into the portrayal of romance as so calculated and drama-free. This second half felt a bit off to me. Even though everything tied up relatively neatly, and the winning girl made sense to me as a girlfriend for the main hero, as a romance, it just didn't feel as heartfelt as I hoped, though that might be more reflective of my own romanticized notions. Despite this, my overall impression of the second season remains positive. It's an above-average series with plenty to offer, and I wouldn't rate it any lower than 7/10.

Fallout - Season 1 (2024) (saison)

anglais Tell me which Fallout you like, and I'll tell you if you'll like this series! It's pretty straightforward. If you're a die-hard fan of the classic Fallout 1 and 2, and everything after that felt like a betrayal of the brand, an inexplicable genre shift, and a mishandling of the post-apocalyptic world, then this series bearing the Bethesda logo in each episode's intro might not be for you. It's likely to trigger some serious PTSD, reminding you of the demise of your beloved childhood... Now, if you're into Fallout 3, 4, or even Fallout 76 (remember when those folks were rarer than vault dwellers on the surface?), then you've struck gold. This series is a treasure trove with a million nods to your favorite games. Whether it's a dog named Dogmeat (though he made an appearance in the earlier games too), a character with the surname Howard, or familiar locations like the Red Rocket gas station and Super Duper Mart, you'll feel right at home. Even fans of Fallout New Vegas get their cowboy fix, with management and corporations as the main antagonists. But what if you haven't played any Fallout games? Well, if you have a soft spot for post-apocalyptic themes, you're likely to enjoy this series too. It's got atmosphere, a unique charisma distinct from, say, The Last of Us. It's gritty, occasionally bizarre, and sometimes cynically funny. The story is intriguing, though it takes a bit to unravel all its twists and turns. The characters are quite likable, though you might need some time to warm up to a few of them. So let's break it down - die-hard fans of Fallout 1 and 2, you might want to step aside and let it pass, maybe one star at most. Fans of Fallout 3, 4, and 76, step right up with your 5 stars. New Vegas fans might lean towards a 3 or 4-star rating. If you're new to the Fallout universe, you could end up anywhere, but with interest in the topic, it's a solid 4 stars. And for those who've seen and played it all (well, except for Fallout 76 in my case), it's a respectable 7.5/10. IT JUST WORKS!

Gekai Elise (2024) (série)

anglais Isekai and time travel themes (regression) are all the rage in anime lately, but this series' blend of the two left me more puzzled than intrigued. Despite my immense respect for doctors, especially surgeons,  Doctor Elise just didn't quite grab me. At times, it felt like a medical mystery à la House M.D., with the creators unafraid to dive into surgical scenes. It's clear the original authors have a solid grasp of medical knowledge. However, even with all this, the series failed to fully capture my interest, especially in a season where a similar girl also used past-life knowledge in the seventh time loop, and also dabbled in romance with a prince, and waded into the intrigues of the local nobility. Unlike Elise, this other series had more oomph, looked visually stunning, and its characters were more endearing to me. I just couldn't help comparing the two (perhaps unfairly to some, but it made sense to me). While Gekai Elise is a decent series, it doesn't quite hit the 4-star mark for me. 6.3/10
