Tales from the Hood 2 (2018)

anglais I'm surprised that the filmmakers made Tales from the Hood 2. After all, it's been a generation since the first episode. Yet maybe the sequel will win over fans and make both the previous generation that saw the first film and the second generation watch this one. I liked the original film a bit more but I'll give this one at least an average score for its B-ness.

La Malédiction de la Momie (1944)

anglais The American film The Mummy's Curse literally fits into a series about mummies. This is because it doesn't really stand out in any significant way. Lon Chaney Jr. tries to at least make his role entertaining, to make it have some basic character. There are a few pretty good scenes, a couple of special effects scenes, but all together it doesn't pull the film up to more than average anyway. The Mummy is simply the weakest monster.

Peelers (2016)

anglais What I appreciate about the Canadian film Peelers is that it's quite bold in showing nudity, but it's not something on which you can base the success of any horror film. The closed environment suits the film, but there's simply nothing that happens here that is interesting enough to make you sit up straight. You'll enjoy a bit of humor here and there, but there's not enough to keep you entertained.

The Haunted World of El Superbeasto (2009)

anglais Rob Zombie made The Haunted World of El Superbeasto as a kind of homage to himself, his worlds, his ideas. And it worked out great for him. The animation works, the music is really great and the story is sufficiently catchy that you will probably be entertained until the end. Definitely an unconventional film. It may not be horror, but you will experience something unique.

Anomalous (2016)

anglais The Spanish-American film Anomalous is ultimately a disappointment. It's not simply because it has a weird ending, it's also because there's not much point in waiting for that ending. It amounts to unnecessary stretching of such a fairly simple fate about what happened to one man. This is a good starting point, but presenting the path that led to it in an interesting way is an art form. Hugo Stuven and his co-writers did not prove to be good storytellers.

American Nightmare 4 : Les origines (2018)

anglais The American film The First Purge primarily consists of the need to add some background information to a series we started watching when the purge already existed. At times I had the feeling that what happened during the first purge was more recent than what happened in the subsequent purges, but continuity is not always perfectly preserved in this style of filmmaking (where the origin is filmed as the fourth episode). As an action horror film, however, the film works well enough.

La Malédiction des hommes-chats (1944)

anglais The sequel to the horror classic Cat People failed to create the same great atmosphere as the original film. The Curse of the Cat People is thus doomed to the category of sequels that didn't make much sense because they simply wanted to ride on the wave of success of the first film. But they fall flat and don't even come close to the quality of the first film. Which is a shame, because Cat People had a good atmosphere.

Potent Media's Sugar Skull Girls (2016)

anglais American young adult fantasy comedy, as Potent Media's Sugar Skull Girls is probably best categorized, is simply not something you want to see twice, maybe not even once. The story is simple, and there are plenty such stories in cartoons and animated series for children. Why this film is categorized as a horror film, I confess I have no idea.

The Thompsons (2012)

anglais The American-British co-production of The Thompsons is not fundamentally good. This is simply a horror film with vampires that doesn't come up with anything fundamentally interesting, only a slightly grittier battle between two vampire families. But it could have been a hell of a lot grittier in that regard, too. It's almost reminiscent of Twilight, except that it wants to be more adult. And it also looks less rosy.

Mes chers voisins (2000)

anglais The Spanish film Common Wealth will surprise you. The genre changes almost from scene to scene, yet the plot is consistent, it makes sense, and as a whole it holds together wonderfully. And that's very, very good. The social criticism here is stronger than horror, and the horror is only one of the tools used here, but when it comes down to it, it's used very well. A great film.
