Souvenirs d'Afrique (1985)
The accent that Meryl speaks in here is really terrible and I just don't get this American craving for accents. It doesn't matter if she speaks English or weird English, she still speaks English... Robert Redford is classically great, but the best thing about this film is simply Africa. That's what it's about, and the rest is just filler.
Bizarre (2015)
This is definitely not a film to my taste, and the word "Bizarre" in the title probably suits it quite well, although I can imagine bizarre things that I would enjoy. This strange collage, which even attempts some sort of plot within a fairly simple story, is peculiar and doesn't captivate me in any way. I watched, but I didn't feel anything.
L'Histoire officielle (1985)
From what I've read about the film, I thought it might get to me, that it would be emotionally powerful. Well, it wasn't. I just couldn't get into it, the characters didn't captivate me, and I couldn't experience the story as it definitely deserved. I think it's a little bit my fault, but it just wasn't that powerful an experience.
Dracula, prince des ténèbres (1966)
Despite some positives, I don't feel that the horror film Dracula: Prince of Darkness stands out. Within the Dracula mythology, it's a relatively standard film that doesn't offer any fundamentally new perspective but simply deals with the presence of a vampire who should be defeated, or perhaps there's even a female vampire who needs to be dispatched from the world. Too bad, maybe more could have been made of it. On the other hand, compared to contemporary Dracula films, it's still pretty good.
Filmový dobrodruh Karel Zeman (2015)
A wonderful documentary showing that we have - or at least had - personalities that truly significantly influenced how the world of film should look. It's incredible who Zeman was able to influence, but what's even more beautiful is that there are still creators today who follow in his footsteps. This documentary might open the way to Karel Zeman for future generations as well.
Sherlock: The Abominable Bride (2016) (téléfilm)
We've been waiting for it for a long time, and it seemed for a long time that it would be a fantastic episode. Especially because I thought it related to the past and that it would just be a little something, simply a special episode that's different from the others. But no, it connects to the classic series, and the resolution is too convoluted. That just didn't sit right with me.
La Famille Bélier (2014)
I'll confess straight away that I was expecting some clownish nonsense, but in the end, I got an immensely entertaining movie that, while a comedy, is primarily a film capable of conveying interesting themes in a humorous way yet gets to the heart of the matter. Moreover, it is not unnecessarily pathetic or sentimental. This was a pleasant surprise.
Gamera contre Viras (1968)
This is a film that's a bit different within the series, yet it fits perfectly into it. It's not a particularly great film; it's not something that stands out within the kaiju series, but it tries its best to captivate the audience even with cheaper means. I don't think that will actually happen, but on the other hand, I also don't think it necessarily has to deter anyone in every case. It's just not likely to captivate you.
Ahillaendeusiganeui seom (2015)
Maybe I was expecting something different when I saw the description of the movie as a thriller, even a horror in some places, but I must say that when I watched it, I didn't really feel much tension or anything else. It's more of a film that wants to play with mysterious elements, but it definitely doesn't deliver the maximum that would wow you.
Geukjeokin halootbam (2015)
It's very clear that Koreans have been inspired by American films in their current film productions and want to measure up to them. They excel perfectly in the quality of visuals, but sometimes they just end up copying American practices, which is simply not good. That's also the case with this film, a romantic comedy that ends up being overly saccharine.
