Shutter (2004)

anglais Considering this is perhaps the millionth variation on the theme of a ghost story about a girl with a “white face", this is an excellent movie that has atmosphere, good ideas and it also cleverly recycles things we have seen elsewhere. The frights come in places where you expect them, but you still jump, the atmosphere is great and the bizarre twist at the end is also good. Overall, this is a pleasant Thai movie where the only thing that spoils it is that loads of similar pictures exist and that the music isn’t exploited to the full.

Session 9 (2001)

anglais This picture carefully builds characters and atmosphere, putting all this into good use during the ending. This is a movie that relies heavily on the screenplay and actors, while luckily both are high class. A bit of a shame that Anderson rather pointlessly uses sleight of hand (read: style). On the other hand, it’s a great advantage if you don’t know what to expect.

Creep (2004)

anglais At first nothing happens and the movie’s head is kept above water only thanks to the “story’s" appealing atmosphere, then we comes one really snappy line, but nothing else happens. Then the fount of all evil comes on the scene and... and nothing happens again, then at last some unintentionally funny scenes come along and then, mercifully, it’s the end. The picture isn’t saved by having Franka Potente in it or by having a social lesson at the end ,-) One of those movies that show that even a movie lasting less than ninety minutes can be far too long.

L'Au-delà (1981)

anglais In my eyes, Fulci, rather than a good filmmaker, is a great painter of celluloid, but in The Beyond that is not a problem.

Aux frontières de l'aube (1987)

anglais A melancholic vampire road movie that isn’t at all for teenagers playing at “children of the night". The overall qualities of this movie are so distinct that they aren’t bowled over by the rather (very) shaky ending. If you’re expecting something like From Dusk Till Dawn, you’ve got another think coming. And forget about Dracula too. There is little action and when there is some, it lacks gallons of blood and vampire powers. It’s filmed very “realistically" and in fact we don’t see any vampire fangs throughout the entire movie. Kathryn Bigelow has created her own vision of vampires. And personally I find this vision ultra pleasant. And essentially it is more pleasant than almost all the competition.

affiche

Toxic Avenger (1984)

anglais A twisted and rather entertaining paraphrase of superhero movies. It's "sick", but mostly it's fun and very wacky. Don’t expect good performances and technical aspects, or an imaginative script, but loads of great ideas and fun.

affiche

Dead Birds (2004)

anglais A good idea setting a horror into a western environment, outstanding music, good in technical terms and an intriguing beginning... All this goes down the pipes about ten minutes in, when the “white goo" first appears. It might have helped if they had left the viewer unsure of what’s happening and showed things from the ghosts’ viewpoint. This way we have a movie where the atmosphere is built up using just music and a couple of frights. This has no story, and it’s the umpteenth variation on the theme “cut-off from the world in a strange, scary house" and nothing new at all.

Re-Animator II, la fiancée de Re-Animator (1990)

anglais A sequel, which is already a straight comedy, in which Jeffrey Combs aka Herebert West and the animatronic puppets excel again. Apart from the weirdness, there is nothing else going on, but that doesn't mean it isn't excellent entertainment, even if it doesn't reach the quality of the first film even in its best moments.

affiche

Le Sous-sol de la peur (1991)

anglais Absolutely warped movie with a “Burn-in-Hell" Mom and Dad who lock kids up in their home, and like a model family they have a doggie too... Definitely don’t expect any horror, suspense or even any serious moments, but if you are fine with untaxing entertainment full of great lines and madcap fun, this is a movie for you. The movie isn’t spoiled even by the child main protagonist with a deprived social background, or rather not until the last third. And Craven really could have spared us the very ending.

The Descent (2005)

anglais Gollum. Gollum. At the beginning it looks like it’s panning out interestingly, but it gradually descends into the darkness of tiresome mediocrity. This story about cavers isn’t at all horrifying, atmospheric or even interesting. If you suffer from claustrophobia, then I would think long and hard before watching it. It is suspenseful only until the moment when the fount of evil turns up. Then it becomes a classic genre movie with needlessly hectic and confusing editing. Interestingly made from a technical point of view, an appealing environment, but overall nothing special. In terms of genre, this movie is related to The Cave, which is so ridiculous that it is unforgettable and, in a way, you have a good time watching. But there is no chance of that with this movie.
