La Cité de l'ombre (2008)

anglais Before watching this movie, I was in doubt if Gil Kenan was capable of making a good adventure movie, however, this movie convinced me that he really can. Saoirse Ronan surprised me a lot with her talented acting ability, and pleasant demeanor, while Harry Treadaway acted like he was unimpressed, and overly mature. The soundtrack was also a very good feast for the ears, giving the movie a real edge. I must also commend the screenplay, which (unlike Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D) is quite unpredictable (even though the happy ending was pretty predictable), and left a good impression. I also liked the set design (the underground city looks really cool), the special effects and some illogicalities in the plot (the final voyage to the surface) were the only things to bring the rating down to three stars.

La Fiancée de Chucky (1998)

anglais The idea of a killer doll is pretty cool, however, I did not really enjoy this movie particularly. However, the scene with the ripping out of the piercing did amuse me quite a bit, that is for sure. :)

L'Âge de glace 2 (2006)

anglais This movie was quite a disappointment. I was expecting at least a somewhat balanced sequel to the first movie, but unfortunately, I got a weaker sequel that failed mainly due to the screenplay, and a proper plot. So that – especially with a big project like the sequel to Ice Age – is a somewhat bigger problem. The one thing that is great about this movie is the mammoth-possum Ellie, whose "performance" (can you even call it that?) is destroyed by a pair of annoying possums. So, I am leniently awarding this movie three stars with a wink.

La Guerre des Rose (1989)

anglais This is a different take on Wars of the Roses, it is called The War of the Roses. The saying "pushing you until you snap." applies very well to this movie. Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner are an absolutely insane and totally convincing couple. Come to think of it – is not the entirety of The War of the Roses perfect too? Woof!

La Ligne verte (1999)

anglais This is a kitsch tear-jerker that relentlessly and mercilessly tortures the audience for over three hours with its relentless pursuit of maximum pathos. It uses New Testament parables, miracles, the supernatural, compassionate glances, and spares no expense with the large number and intensity of its clichéd characters. A miracle happened to me, too, and it was that I somehow endured the three hour running time, but only just. In retrospect, I can not help but marvel at how anyone could be moved by such a matchless piece of trash, let alone how it could be so massively popular... I understand that lovers of severely kitsch tear-jerkers may find something to like here, but for me, it rather reaffirms, again and again, that the adaptations of King's books, with the exception of The Shawshank Redemption, do nothing for me. For the performances of Hanks and Duncan I give 1 star, a higher rating is out of the question as I can not think of anything constructive.

La Planète des singes (2001)

anglais No matter what anyone else says, I surprisingly liked Burton's Planet of the Apes. It is a decent remake, both in terms of the stunning visuals and also the plot. In addition to that, seeing Helena Bonham-Carter as an ape provided a memorable experience ;)

La Planète des singes (1968)

anglais This is one of the foundational works of modern science fiction movies that I have watched repeatedly, and I never tire of it. Also, don't let anyone tell you that the Burton remake is just a kitsch. In my opinion, both films are on the same level, with a mysterious charm, oppressive atmosphere, and much more.

La Plus Belle Victoire (2004)

anglais I could not help it, but this movie did not impress me at all. While I like Dunst and Bettany, I found this to be an incredibly vacuous movie, dominated mainly by typical cinematic conventions, stale dialogue, predictability, and boredom. Ninety-eight minutes felt incredibly long to sit through, and if it were not for the above two actors, I probably would have fallen asleep from boredom. I am awarding this a weak two stars.

La Souris (1997)

anglais I loved this back when I was a kid. It is wacky, funny, insane, far-fetched – but why not? You shall have fun, you shall laugh... so take it easy. ;)
