Au milieu du 19e siècle, à New York, Catherine Sloper vit confortablement dans une riche demeure avec son père, un veuf aux manières strictes. La jeune fille, timide et sans grand attrait, passe son temps à broder. Elle fait alors la rencontre du séduisant Morris Townsend lors d'un bal, qui lui fait aussitôt une cour empressée.
