In Arizona, people are working hard to build a wooden encampment. Slowly, the future residents of this newly built wooden hamlet arrive. They are respectable Japanese-American families, and they are completely unprepared for a long-term stay in an internment camp for enemies of the state. We hear a man in an English prison reading a letter aloud, who has been accused of collaborating with Al Qaeda. He wrote this personal and lucidly formulated text while waiting for his transfer to the American military prison in Guantánamo Bay. Although differing in time and place, the parallel stories share the common characteristic of the prisoners' paralysing shock at what is happening to them. Are they the enemy now?
