Royko (Nakayama Miho), is a popular romance novelist and college lecturer of literature. She meets Chanhae, a young Korean man who is in Japan to study, on campus. They become close, but their relationship is put at risk when Royko begins to show signs of Alzheimer's. Chanhae believes he can love Royko despite the Alzheimer's, but she does not want him to witness her illness and breaks up with him. Like one of Royko's dime novels, Butterfly Sleep is a melodrama dealing with terminal illness. There, a woman tries to hold on to her dignity and the memory of her love.
