The Ancines Woods

Benito Freire is a pedlar who guides emigrating peasants through the Galician countryside. Often when he crosses the Ancines forest, a desert spot in the country, he has severe epileptic fits in the course of which he murders his victims. The backward and superstitious environment in which he lives breeds the belief (held by everyone, including Benito himself) that he is in fact a werewolf who is driven to murder by his own savage nature.
